Kings of Pastry

Documentary / Netherlands/USA/UK/France / 2010 / 87 min / In French and English with English subtitles

Directed by
D A Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus

Follows Chicago chef and Alsace native Jacquy Pfeiffer as he competes to win the title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France, the highest honor bestowed upon a pastry chef. Highly insular and generally unknown outside food circles (at least in America) the competition practically defines art for art’s sake (it is all technically food, though much of it is not meant to be eaten). There’s a genuinely affecting human tale here, though, told through the journey Pfeiffer and the other chefs make. It’s about passion, perseverance and the dedication and sacrifice it takes to be regarded as among the elite. (Mild language.)
