Jardín en el Mar (Garden in the Sea)
Mexico / 2012 / 68 mins / Nonfiction Features / In Spanish and English with English subtitles
Directed by Thomas Riedelsheimer
Jardín en el Mar is the story of an exceptional project in the islands of the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur, Mexico, which several years ago became a UNESCO world heritage site as a result of activist efforts. But the story of Espíritu Santo Island is especially remarkable: it was donated to the people of Mexico for its conservation in perpetuity. Jardín en el Mar follows the path of renowned Spanish artist Cristina Iglesias, who was asked to make a piece of art for the island. She decided to create a “Garden in the Sea”, a labyrinth-like setting of various screens sunk into the sea. The film follows the four-year process of making the artwork, but also dives deep into the beauty of the place and the heart and soul of the people involved. It is a journey into a remote and mystic place full of wonders, and a place of immense fragility.
