Synopsis
A rollicking, transgressive look at skateboard culture in communist East Germany. As the title suggests, the filmmakers believe skateboarding the eastern bloc wasn’t about wanting to be more American, just to be more free, and came as a natural, youthful response to repression. Grainy and beautifully dated, this ain’t california evokes a generation of young punks who defied a regime with kick flips.
